Sage Creek Midwifery Services

Midwifery Care

Care usually begins with a complimentary consultation, where we meet and discuss your ideas about birth and how I might serve you. If you feel that you would like to continue care with me, you can call me and we will set up your first prenatal appointment.

You will be seen prenatally once a month until 28 weeks of pregnancy then biweekly until 36 weeks and weekly until the birth of your baby. When labor is established, I will arrive within a reasonable amount of time from when you call and, in most circumstances, stay with you until two to four hours postpartum. A postpartum visit will occur within 24-48 hours then at one week, two, four, and six weeks. Newborn exams and care will also occur, though this does not replace the care of a pediatrician.

One of the hallmarks of midwifery care is that it is a partnership between the midwife, the woman and her family.  My role as your midwife is to provide you with information and resources so that you can make informed decisions regarding care based on evidence based practices and/or the standards of care in the community. While this requires a greater level of responsibility from you it also affords you a greater level of autonomy.

Abdominal Massage

Every culture has beliefs, mythology, traditions and rituals regarding massage and childbearing. Intuitively and experientially, women have known that massage and touch are valuable assets during pregnancy and birth. From a simple holding of hands to an elaborate full-body massage, touch is the foundation and heart of midwifery care.

The tradition of abdominal massage is an age-old technique that has become a well-respected method for adjusting and balancing a woman's uterus, maximizing its ability to function.

This care is especially advantageous in pregnancy because it helps with:

  • Improved digestion

  • Reduces acid reflux and heartburn

  • Relieves round ligament pain

  • Low back or hip discomfort

  • SPD

  • Sacral or coccyx pain

  • Sciatica

  • Edema

  • Improved blood flow to the baby

  • Reduces tension and anxiety

  • Improved alignment of pelvic bones

  • Improved fetal positioning for birth

All clients will be offered abdominal massage throughout their pregnancy from week 14 until labor and birth.
